On October 18, Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Atlantic will open their doors to local media for a Cyber Media Day to learn more about NIWC Atlantic’s mission, tour labs and interview subject matter experts. NIWC Atlantic, formerly known as Space and Naval Warfare (SPAWAR) Systems Center, has been a vital part of the Charleston community and economy for nearly 40 years, but not many people are aware of the critical support and technical solutions delivered to Sailors and Marines around the world.

CHARLESTON, S.C. – On October 18, Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Atlantic will open their doors to local media for a Cyber Media Day to learn more about NIWC Atlantic’s mission, tour labs and interview subject matter experts. NIWC Atlantic, formerly known as Space and Naval Warfare (SPAWAR) Systems Center, has been a vital part of the Charleston community and economy for nearly 40 years, but not many people are aware of the critical support and technical solutions delivered to Sailors and Marines around the world.   NIWC Atlantic addresses the Warfighter’s top technology challenges through research, development, delivery, and sustainment of the very best in Information Warfare solutions, with the majority of the work conducted on the Naval Weapons Station at Joint Base Charleston. NIWC Atlantic is comprised of more than 4,900 government civilians, 120 military personnel and nearly 9,000 contractors with 12 world-wide locations to provide support to the fleet 24/7.  Additionally, NIWC Atlantic has a vast local footprint, with 17,800 jobs created and $3.2 billion in economic activity, according to a 2023 study by the University of South Carolina.  Cyber Media Day Agenda:  

  1. Command overview from Capt. Nicole Nigro, commanding officer, and Mr. Peter Reddy, executive director, with the opportunity for interviews 
  2. Cyber forensics overview on how experts recover critical data for federal investigators and a recovery demonstration and interview opportunity with Sean Brennen, Cyber Forensics Service Team Lead. NIWC Atlantic b-roll of Cyber Forensics lab and operations will be provided for use. 
  3. Look through virtual reality (VR) goggles for a U.S. Marine Corp Light Armored Vehicle (LAV) and see how the Immersive Technologies and Simulations Lab (ITSL) prototype provides LAV commanders 360-degree awareness. Interview opportunity with Austin Freeman, the ITSL lab’s lead engineer, to discuss cybersecurity’s critical role in the use of these goggles. 
  4. Tour the Defense Health Agency (DHA) Cyber Operations Center (CyOC) and learn how the Cybersecurity Service Provider (CSSP) team protects hospitals and medical centers nationwide.  **NO CAMERAS, ELECTRONICS, IPHONES, MICROPHONES, RECORDING DEVICES ARE PERMITTED IN THE CyOC. However, NIWC Atlantic b-roll of CyOC and staff will be provided for use.** 
  5. Interview Cecilia Dallier, CSSP director, and LCDR Daniel Kapral, Navy and Combatant Commander portfolio manager, about CSSP and the CyOC. 

Cyber Media Day will be from 1:00 p.m.-3:45 p.m. Transportation on and off the base will be provided to escort media. Due to base access, please plan to be at Cyber Media Day from 1:00 p.m.-3:45 p.m. An RSVP is required as badging will have to be provided. All attending must be U.S. Citizens.
