Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Atlantic Executive Director Peter C. Reddy, along with senior command staff, visited the Department of Energy (DOE)’s Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) on April 29 in support of a partnership agreement the two organizations executed last year to open channels of collaboration.

The tour took place at SRNL’s Advanced Technology Proving Ground (ATPG) at the DOE’s Savannah River Site (SRS).

Officials from U.S. Army Cyber Command and the U.S. Army Cyber Center of Excellence in Fort Eisenhower, Georgia, joined Reddy on the tour of key facilities that support relevant cyber and electromagnetic spectrum experimentation within the ATPG.

Representatives of the U.S. Army and Air National Guards from South Carolina, North Carolina, Mississippi and Georgia also participated in the engagement, including Maj. Gen. Jeff Jones, deputy adjutant general of the South Carolina Army National Guard.

The purpose of NIWC Atlantic’s visit was to discuss various cooperative science, research and technology development interchanges ongoing between NIWC Atlantic and SRNL.

Existing infrastructure, facilities and spaces at SRS offer numerous testing and experimentation scenarios that may appeal to ATPG stakeholders — from the use of waterways, railyards and decommissioned nuclear facilities to the 17 miles of isolated transmission lines and over 600 miles of roadways that cut across both open terrain and heavily forested areas.

Still in development, the ATPG will support technology development and training for a wide variety of national security missions.

During the past year, NIWC Atlantic and SRNL have sought to develop dual-use training, testing and experimentation to enhance their research and development efforts in fields like electromagnetic warfare, spectrum operations, cybersecurity, and autonomous systems.
