Direct Hire Authority (DHA) for Students at Science and Technology Reinvention Labs (STRL)

Direct Hire Authority (DHA) for Students at Science and Technology Reinvention Labs (STRL) allow agencies to hire students enrolled in a Scientific, Technical, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) course of study at an accredited institution of higher education on a temporary or term basis.

Eligibility

• Students must be enrolled in a Scientific or Engineering Program leading to a Bachelor's or Advanced degree in a STEM course of study.

The Pathways Internship Program

The Pathways Internship Program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school. Students who successfully complete the program may be eligible for conversion to a permanent job in the civil service.

Eligibility

• Current students in an accredited high school, college professional, technical, vocational and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate.

Program Administration

• Interns may work either part-time or full-time.
• Intern's job will be related to the Intern's academic career goals or field of study.

The Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP)

The Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP) for Students with Disabilities is a recruitment and referral program that connects federal and private sector employers nationwide with highly motivated college students and recent graduates with disabilities who are eager to prove their abilities in the workplace through summer or permanent jobs.

Eligibility

• Applicants must be current, full-time undergraduate or graduate students with a disability, or have graduated within one year of the release of the database each December.

The Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SEAP)

The Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SEAP) provides an opportunity for students to participate in research at a Department of Navy (DoN) laboratory during the summer. Participating students spend 8 weeks during the summer doing research. Program dates are fixed and cannot be changed. No travel/relocation allowance will be provided.

Eligibility

• High school students who have completed at least Grade 9. A graduating senior is eligible to apply.
• Must be 16 years of age for most laboratories. Some laboratories may accept a 15 year old applicant.

The Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART)

The SMART Scholarship-for-Service Program, funded by the Department of Defense (DoD), is a combined educational and workforce development opportunity for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students. SMART offers scholarships for undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students currently pursuing a degree in one of the 24 STEM disciplines.

Eligibility

• 18 years of age or older as of August 1, 2024
• Requesting at least 1 year of degree funding prior to graduation (which starts at the program start date)
• Able to complete at least one summer internship (multi-year scholars only)
• Willing to accept post-graduation employment with the DoD
• A student in good standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
• Able to produce a fall 2023 college transcript from a regionally accredited US college or university, OR be pursuing a graduate degree at a regionally accredited US college or university

Program Administration

• Scholarship recipients receive full tuition, full stipends, internships, and guaranteed employment with the DoD after graduation.
• Summer internships are performed at DoD facilities alongside scientists and engineers; these experiences prepare scholars for full-time employment and get them accustomed to working with the DoD.
