Largely shaped by the Palmetto Tech Bridge (PTB), an outreach arm of NIWC Atlantic, the unique partnership was formed to increase economic competitiveness in the state of South Carolina while also supporting innovation ecosystems off base that help advance technologies potentially beneficial to the warfighter.
Peter C. Reddy, NIWC Atlantic executive director, presented a command overview during the event that helped participants consider focus areas where across-the-board collaboration might occur. Afterwards, several command Senior Scientific Technical Managers (SSTMs) and subject matter experts expounded on that work, pointing out ways NIWC Atlantic provides warfighters with Information Advantage through technology development in artificial intelligence, secure software, digital engineering, assured communications and cybersecurity.
Also, along with other administrative staff, members of the command explained how NIWC Atlantic fosters a host of STEM internship and outreach opportunities meant to educate and inspire the next generation of innovating scientist and engineers.
Following the meeting, PTB Director Erik Gardner escorted Susie Shannon, president and CEO of SC Competes, and the rest of her staff on a tour of the National Cyber Range Complex located at NIWC Atlantic headquarters in Charleston.
As a partnership intermediary of NIWC Atlantic and as an extension of the Navy’s greater tech bridge network, SC Competes has the opportunity to support small businesses and academic institutions that need or can make demonstrably productive use of technology-related assistance from a federal lab like NIWC Atlantic.
